Emerald City

Have you ever worked on a project for so long that you are just sick of seeing it? That was me with this quilt.

I loved the pattern. I love Bonnie Hunter quilts. I thought I'll just do this up in stages. I'll make the triangles - all 1000+ blessed half square triangles. I'll make the sashing. I did break it down into parts. It took me over three years. Mostly because it got put in time out several times

And then where does a person store such a large block?? When I was almost done I again thought about what do I do with an 84" square quilt?? It's not really big enough for a bed and too big to be a lap quilt. So I added quarter square triangles to the edges. It is now a 90" square.

As I was so sick of green I just could not bring myself to put on a green backing. I chose a geometric green, purple, green and white fabric. While I still like the print and the colors I would not choose this again. The front is traditional, the back is modern. But what's done is done. I even made a pillow to go along with it.

Even once it was quilted I left it sit for months before putting on the binding. Did I mention how sick I am if seeing green? But even after using up all those green scraps and pieces I was left with more green scraps and pieces. What's a girl to do but make more quilts.

I think I'll probably gift this to my granddaughter as she says she really likes it.

PS this is for Lauren. Finally, a post.

Have an swell day, Sue

  1. 1000+ half square triangles??? Holy hell that is a big number...but you persevered and finished it to a useful size. It is a beauty but I can understand how you got sick of green. I'm sure your granddaughter will treasure it!
And thank you for posting!!! Let's not wait so long before you post again ;-)

  2. Yes, I can relate to that STAR quilt I designed and I'm NOT a quilt designer as my results would testify. You probably witnessed my frustration unfold on my blog posts.
Your project is a work of art and with all those tiny pieces can understand your frustration but now you have a beauty to be an heirloom to a granddaughter who loves the quilt and its maker.

  3. Last year I made a mostly grays-blacks king-size for DS and GD's mom. I was so happy to be done with that, so tired of grays, so big. I'm just starting a lots-of-greens 16-patch for GD's mom. I hope I don't get tired of green, but at least it's only a full-queen size. I definitely need some happier greens that all those drab dull ones in the stash. And why do I have so many yellow-green fat quarters?

You did good on this quilt, it is very pretty. Not that you asked, but if GD loves it, that's where it should go.

  4. Your quilt is sweet. Am not a green person, but this is is a nice one. I am going to have the same problem. I just purchased a large cross stitch Halloween pattern that is going to take me forever to stich. I am already regretting me purchasing this. Janice

Y'all might remember this rug. I started this in a class with Maria Barton. That was in July. I showed her a picture I got off the Inte...
